Warren Democratic State Representative Michael O'Brien announced Friday the passage of House Bill (HB) 13, legislation to create the Ohio Residential Broadband Expansion Program.

The program is designed specifically to bring broadband services to unserved residential households. With its passing in the House, the bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration.

HB 13, a result of combined efforts from government and private enterprise, aims to provide broadband connectivity to unserved households across the entire state.

Rep. O'Brien says this is a critical time for high-speed connectivity, which is simply a necessity.

"I have seen firsthand how constituents struggle without access to broadband. Now, more than ever, our lives are dependent upon broadband access," he said in a press release.

During the coronavirus crisis, high-speed internet access is crucial for not only day to day tasks, but important health meetings, too, O'Brien says.

"Many Ohioans are still working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, others are seeking vital medical attention via Telehealth, or filing for unemployment benefits and taking online courses. Access is vital in all these areas and many more."
