Officials concerned residents will set off fireworks on 4th of July due to pandemic

COITSVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio - "It is a concern of all fire departments this year that more people are going to have their own firework show than attending a public event," Coitsville Fire Chief, George Brown, said.
It's currently illegal to set off consumer fireworks in Ohio, but both safety and health officials fear canceled 4th of July events amidst the pandemic could lead to a high risk of danger.
"Anytime you light fireworks at home, you have the risk of burns and amputations by lighting explosives off to close," Dr. Matthew Burns of Mercy Health Emergency Room said.
However, Brown said if people go forth and use any kind of consumer firework products, it's crucial to follow guidelines.
"Number one: Safe distancing -- You don't want children around when you're shooting them off," he said. "You want to make sure you have a bucket of water or a garden hose."
He said burns and structure fires are the most common incidents to happen every year during festivities.
"People want to continue to do that this year, and I'm afraid that they will take fireworks into their own hands," he said.
The Ohio House approved a bill allowing residents to shoot off fireworks, which is moving to the Senate for consideration.
