The defendants from the Alchemy Acres animal sanctuary in Salem and the site of an animal seizure of more than 200 animals were sentenced Friday.

Alchemy acres operators, Stephen, Julie, Emily, and Katie Sacco, were placed on probation for five years and will now be prohibited from working with animals for five years.

They surrendered all 200 of their animals, and now those pets are looking for their "furever" homes.

Dogs, cats, birds, guinea pigs, and rabbits were just some of the kinds of animals seized from the property in what was described by humane agents as filthy and extremely unhealthy conditions at Alchemy.

Now, these animals are on the mend and ready for adoption.

"We had a lot of them with skin issues. We took them to the vet and got them medications and sprays. Their hair is growing back. They're healthy. Every animal had to be checked, shots, spayed or neutered, wormed, flea stuff, it was a lot," said Paula Duke of the Columbiana Co. Humane Society.

Some animals were lost pets that were already claimed by their owners. Some even plan to file civil suits against the Saccos for the conditions the animals were in.

To make sure this doesn't happen again, animal advocates are asking for changes in animal law to make it, so facilities like Alchemy have to be inspected.

"I believe there should be inspections on all animal welfare facilities, including dog pounds. Any place that houses animals should be open to inspections at least once or twice a year, unannounced. It's unfortunate, but I believe it's what we have to do to protect the animals. They can't call 911," said animal advocate, Brenda Austin.
