CORTLAND, Ohio - This weekend in Cortland you'll have a chance to see an art exhibit that fits in with the pandemic theme over the last several months.

On display, in the middle of a cul de sac, will be a series of portraits called "The COVID 19."

Under normal circumstances, Sue Jacobs teaches art classes all around the area. She isn't the type of person who's used to having an empty schedule.

"I'd been teaching classes, like a full schedule at art centers, at my home studio, convalescent homes," said Jacobs. "Everything stopped, like in one week."

So to pass the time during the shutdown this spring, she painted a portrait of David Bowie. That led to Stevie Nicks and the process was officially in motion.

"When I got up to about six or seven, I thought 'Maybe I ought to do 19 and make it the COVID-19,' so that was kind of my mission," said Jacobs.

Jacobs says she had to kind of force herself to do something, just to avoid thinking about what was going on in the world.

She posted her progress on Facebook and it turns out these portraits were helping others do the same.

"It really did give me a purpose," said Jacobs. "And then I post them on Facebook... it was kind of like a spark for everybody's day to see what I was doing next."

It's a celebrity series: everyone from Mick Jagger to Dr. Anthony Fauci; some of them a little easier to come up with than others.

"I was working on Lionel Ritchie for a long time and he kept looking like Eddie Murphy," said Jacobs. "Sometimes it falls in really quick, like the Prince painting I think I did in about two hours. It just worked."

After starting back in March, she finally finished number 19 earlier this month; they've officially taken over her studio space at this point.

In an exhibit fitting for a pandemic, they'll be on display in a socially-distanced manner in her cul de sac.

"A friend of mine said, 'well when are you having an exhibit?' I said, 'oh, I don't know.' She said, 'put it in the cul de sac.' I said ok. That's what I'm doing," said Jacobs.

The perfect display for the exhibit known as "The COVID 19."

If you'd like to see it in person, it will be on display from 1pm until 3pm on Saturday, September 26th at the cul de sac at the end of Fallehn Drive in Cortland. The exhibit will be socially-distanced, so you can either walk through or drive through.

The portraits are available to buy, although some have already sold. You can learn more and see example of her artwork at susanjacobsart.com.

She has already started working on an extension of this series, called "Beyond 19." One portrait is already finished with three others in the works.
