YOUNGSTOWN - After giving turkeys to hundreds of people and families for Thanksgiving, the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission plans to distribute 6,000 hams for Christmas.

The commission, in partnership with Gleaner’s Food Bank, plans to conduct a food distribution event on Saturday, December 19, 2020, from 10 am until 2 pm at Youngstown’s Covelli Centre, 229 East Front Street.

Santa Claus will be there to help pass out food as well as the hams.

The distribution will follow current Ohio COVID-19 public health directives regarding mandatory masks and social distancing for volunteers.

Patrons are requested to wear masks and stay in their vehicles and drive through the distribution area.

The event is funded in part by CARES Act funds provided by the United States government to Mahoning County.

The commission is looking for military veteran and non-veteran volunteers to assist in the distribution of food.

Veterans are asked to wear masks, as well as something signifying their military affiliation.  Arrive no later than 9 AM if you wish to volunteer. Contact Leo Connelly at (330) 261-5975 (voice or text) if you would like to volunteer.

No registration is needed for the event.
