Warren cop, bail bondsman rescue man from burning car

WARREN, Ohio - A good Samaritan and a Warren Police Officer are being credited with saving the life of a man trapped in a burning car.
Police believe a man suffering from a medical condition drove off East Market Street and into some bushes near the North Mar Church Wednesday morning.
Bail bondsman Tom Cool ran up to the burning car along with a police officer who used his knife to cut the man’s seat belt and rescue the victim.
"We were trying to get the guy to wake up. He seemed to be out of it, then we saw flames coming out around the gas tank," said Cool.
As the intensity of the smoke and flames grew, they acted fast.
"The police officer broke the window out. I went through the back window and unlocked it. We opened the door and the officer actually went into the car and was trying to unbuckle the seat belt and the officer's legs caught on fire. People from North Mar Church helped the officer roll in the snow and put out the fire on the lower part of his pants legs," said Cool.
Unfazed Officer Weber and Cool got the front door open.
"Weber cut the seat belt off, he really did a great job. Then a man who works at North Mar Church also helped us," Cool added.
The North Mar Maintenance Man Chris James said, "The three of us managed to get the guy drug up the hill as the fire department showed up."
Warren firefighters continued for an hour putting out the flames that kept reigniting.
"I'm glad those people were nearby and we need more of those people in the world, like I said, if he would have been stuck in that vehicle once it caught fire. He's in the hospital recovering right now. If he would have been stuck in the vehicle, he might not have been," said Lieutenant Brandon Gaines of the Warren Fire Department.
The rescued man was taken to the hospital. There is no word on his exact condition.
