Ohio lawmakers make move for fewer trips to the BMV

Ohio lawmakers just passed an $8.3 billion transportation budget that will help pave the way for road, highways and bridge improvements throughout the state.
But tucked away in that budget are some changes to how you renew your driver's license.
In the upcoming fiscal year, people will be able renew their driver's license after 4 years, online. That means you'll still need to do the required vision test in person every 8 years.
People 21 News spoke with who were waiting outside the BMV in Boardman Monday said they think it's a great move.
"I've been her about 45 minutes so far," said Jacob Morgan of Boardman. "I think that will save a lot of hassle for people not having to come out here and stand out in the cold."
The online option will only available for drivers between the ages of 21 and 65 who are renewing a license. New drivers and people with new addresses will still have to show up in person. Local lawmakers say the move should help speed things up at the BMV.
"It eliminates the line at the BMV. If you go to the BMV, even without the covid issue, there are enormous lines. This would cut down the lines and make it more customer friendly," said State Representative, Michael O'Brien.
Some other good news for consumers in the Ohio Transportation budget: No new increases in the Ohio gas tax for the next two years and no new changes to vehicle registration fees.
