Long time rivals Mineral Ridge High School and McDonald High School won't only be competing in football this week.

Local restaurant The Post Office Pub has turned itself into the "Rivalry Week Restaurant" and has created a contest for both the elementary and high schools of Mineral Ridge and McDonald, who will be playing in their annual rivalry game this Friday.

Cheerleaders from both school kicked off the competition earlier this week, and decorated the pub down the middle with their respective school colors. The cheerleaders received lunch on the day they decorated, and community service hours for their time.

For the elementary school, the homeroom class that brings in the most guests by the end of the week will receive a catered lunch at school and the teacher of the homeroom class will receive a target gift card.

For the high school that brings in the most guests overall, they will receive a bragging rights spirit trophy.

Currently both schools are practically neck and neck, according to Heather Sylak, who is part owner of the Post Office Pub.

Sylak was inspired from memories of her youth to start this contest. Sylak told 21 News that a local Pizza Hut from her hometown would do a similar contest every year for the local rivalry football teams, and she wanted to see if it would work at the Post Office Pub.

The varsity game between Mineral Ridge and McDonald is taking place Friday night, and Sylak is hoping that the game will bring people out to the pub, and says that this event has been great for the local community and her small business.

The contest will end Saturday night when the restaurant closes, and the winner will be announced through social media on Sunday.
