United States & Mahoning Valley - 1,400 workers at Kellogg's U.S. cereal plants are on strike after a dispute between the union and management over issues like pay, benefits and healthcare.

Local Sparkle grocery stores said there could be an impact.

"Obviously nobody wants to see a strike because that could cause an interruption in getting product to the stores," Cornersburg Plaza Assitant Manager John Allen said, "It would probably mean a lower selection depending on what they have already manufactured and ready to ship."

While it's unclear if and when Kellogg's iconic brands will be affected, Allen said this is just another added burden to an already fluid supply chain.

"The longer the strike, obviously we're going to start seeing sporadic out of stocks, which we do right now anyway because of the pandemic," he said, "As you can see from our shelves, there are empty spaces and a lot of products still not coming in. I mean, it's hit and miss with a lot of manufacturers, but a strike... it would not be a good thing."

As of now, local stores said their Kellogg's cereals are mostly stocked up, but if the strike continues and the wholesaler providing the cereal runs out, that's when a shortage could happen.

Kellogg's company said it hopes to bring non-union workers in to resume operations this week.
