After a large amount of positive COVID-19 tests were reported upon Youngstown State's return to campus for the spring semester, the school has seen a drop in cases for the second week in a row.

YSU's COVID-19 Dashboard shows that 48 people at the university tested positive between January 23 and 29. Out of that total, 42 of the cases were students, 36 of whom were living off-campus. The additional six positive cases were employees.

The school saw 79 total cases by both students and employees the week prior.

This second straight week of decreasing cases reported comes after YSU had its highest spike in positive COVID-19 tests for the week of January 9 through 15. Students were required to take a COVID-19 test before coming back to school for the spring semester, and 158 students and employees returned positive results.

That term broke the already previous high set during the first week of 2022, when 138 total people came down with COVID-19 at the school.

But now, the university is seeing case rates that mirror the Fall 2021 semester, when 41 students and one employee tested positive the week after Thanksgiving.

Since Christmas time, YSU saw spikes in cases resembling the trend reported by the Ohio Department of Health after the Omicron variant spread and surged throughout the state. As case rates drop across the state, the same goes for the university.

YSU updates its COVID-19 Dashboard every Monday.
