Firefighters from the Valley joined search and rescue teams looking for people missing in massive floods that destroyed entire communities in Appalachia.

The Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department and Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Dept sent three members to Perry County, Kentucky to take part in Operation Hazard Floods.

Calcutta Fire Department says day one of Operation Hazard Floods was a success with units performing several active searches with the Perry County Sheriff's Department, FEMA and members of the National Guard.

That region of Kentucky has been struck with one of the most catastrophic floods in the state’s history leaving fifteen people dead and dozens more missing.

Working with Chief Dave McCoy, Calcutta Volunteer Fire Dep.t Lieutenant Randy Schneider has organized a response team with Hanover Twp Volunteer Firefighters Tim Roush & Adam Williams.

Calcutta has been in direct contact with the EMA director there in Perry County and has requested the Calcutta Fire Department rescue boat to participate in active search and rescues going on now.

The trio will be stationed with the Hazard Fire Department for the next several days.

This is the Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department’s second trip to Kentucky in less than a year after participating in search and rescue following devastating tornadoes in Mayfield, Kentucky this past December.
