A 17-foot-deep sinkhole has closed part of Canfield Road in Youngstown, requiring a major detour.

City engineers say a broken sewer line caused the ground to give way along Canfield Road about sixty feet east of Arden Boulevard on Monday.

As a result, Canfield Road is closed to through traffic between Arden and Glenwood Avenue for the next week or two, according to Deputy Director of Public Works Chuck Shasho. The road will be open to residents along the road only during the repair to the sewer line.

Because Canfield Road is also US Route 62, truck traffic is being detoured along Meridian Road to Mahoning Avenue, to Glenwood Avenue. Some drivers have been making their own detours. Two cars trying to go around the closure became stranded on an icy hill on Tuesday morning.

Shasho said that homes will not be impacted during the repair, as sewer flow is being maintained through bypass pumping.

A Mill Creek MetroParks representative said that West Newport Drive from Canfield Road to the Newport Boathouse, including Kiowa Road and Cascade Drive, will be closed to all vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic for approximately two weeks. Hampton Drive will remain open for traffic.
