DeWine releases update on water sampling, soil removal in East Palestine

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio - Wednesday was another busy day around the East Palestine train derailment site as crews continue their cleanup of the area.
Governor Mike DeWine released an update on the status of remediation work Wednesday.
DeWine says the Ohio EPA will continue testing the municipal water once a week in the area out of an abundance of caution. Last week, test results found East Palestine's municipal water found it to be free from contaminants from the derailment.
The Columbiana County Health Department has sampled nearly 75 private wells in East Palestine and final test results are pending. Governor DeWine's Office says to drink bottled water until you've received results from private well testing.
To schedule a test for a private well, call 330-849-3919.
According to the release, the contaminated section of Sulphur Run near the derailment remains dammed to prevent contamination of other water bodies. Aeration is being done to treat contamination which drives chemicals to the surface where they are extracted from the water.
DeWine said the quality of Leslie Run continues to improve with most recent samples showing very low levels of butyl acrylate and ethyl hexyl acrylate. Tests of North Fork Little Beaver Creek show lower levels of ethyl hexyl acrylate and no traces of butyl acrylate.
Vinyl chloride has not been detected in the waterways.
The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission said they're no longer detecting contaminants related to the derailment in the Ohio River.
Soil removal is still underway near the derailment site as well.
To date, more than 4,500 cubic yards of contaminated soil have been removed from the derailment area.
