Austintown Middle School was placed on lockdown Monday morning as police investigated a possible threat that school officials say turned out not to be credible.

Authorities learned that a middle school student had posted a picture on Snapchat of himself with a gun in his waistband.

When the seventh grader came to school and went directly to the restroom, the school was placed on lockdown.

A school spokesperson tells 21 News that when the student was questioned, police learned that the gun in the picture was a BB gun.

The student, whose locker was also searched, was removed from class while school officials continue to investigate.

Police plan to file charges of inducing panic against the student.
