NEWTON FALLS, Ohio - All eyes were on the more than 25 pound apple pie at the Newton Falls senior citizen center located at 601 W. Broad St.

The pie was made by City Manager Pam Priddy, she says it took her three hours to bake using 25 pounds worth of apples. The colossal dessert was provided as part of the Newton Falls senior citizen kitchen to help serve older members of the community.

Close to 50 people were in attendance and within an hour of its grand entrance the multi-layer pie was almost gone.

Volunteers spend three days a week creating meals and desserts for senior citizens in the area, giving them a chance mingle and enjoy fresh home cooked meals gratis.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11:45 a.m. people over 50 years old can receive a hot lunch and partake in group activities.

Program leaders strongly recommend signing up at the center two days prior to the lunch date.

Payment is not required but a suggested donation for people 60 years old and over is $3.00. The recommended donation for people under the age of 60 is $5.50.

The center is currently looking for more volunteers and donations.
