CANFIELD, Ohio -
A simple lemonade is helping a man badly hurt in a motorcycle crash.
A grandmother is hoping to leave a legacy of helping others and got her granddaughters started early with a project that keeps giving.
Lemonade is awesome to get said one of Jenny Kennedy's granddaughters as she welcomed people to their Lemonade stand in Canfield.
The lemonade stand run by Harper, Palmer, Landry and their grandmother Jenny, is raising money to help another. Cup by Cup of the sweet drink and snacks have been helping others in the community.
Over the last 8 years the stand has raised around $20,000 to help various people and causes.
"This year the money's going to a guy named Rick that lost his leg in a car accident," Harper and Olivia said.
"I went to school with Rick. I gave the girls the option, a couple of people, to decide who they wanted to have the lemonade stand for this year, and they chose him. And he's just a kind hearted person. You couldn't say a mean thing about him, and he would never say a mean thing about anybody so he was a good choice for us this year," Jenny Kennedy explained.
Rick D'Amico had to have his leg amputated after a truck pulled in front of him while he was on a motorcycle last year.
He tells us the driver had minimal insurance coverage. Plus he has been unable to work.
Rick tells WFMJ News he is humbled and is thankful for the kindness of the kids, friends, and people he doesn't know. He's also optimistic about his new leg that he is learning to use. A leg that weighs 10 pounds.
"These guys their hearts are huge. I haven't talked to these people in 40 years, some of these people almost 50 years. Isn't it amazing!
That's some Youngstown, Boardman spirit right there. Some Ohio spirit," Rich D'Amico said.
The goal is to raise $6,000 to help him with his recovery as these young girls help Rick and others each year turn lemons into lemonade!
"My favorite part about doing this is helping people that need it the most. And also just having fun and meeting new people," Olivia added.
