Struthers Police say Niles man tried spending 'prop' money at Family Dollar

STRUTHERS, Ohio - A Niles man is in the Mahoning County jail for counterfeiting after police say he tried to pass “funny money” at the Family Dollar on Fifth Street in Struthers.
The cashier claims 18-year-old Antonio Torres handed her six twenty-dollar bills on Monday, asking that the value be transferred to the Cash App on his phone.
Checking the bills with a counterfeit detection pen, the cashier determined that the money was phony.
It just so happened that an off-duty Struthers Police Officer, who was in the store shopping at the time, detained Torres until other officers arrived.
Police say they searched Torres and found six more counterfeit twenties in his pocket.
Even if the cashier didn’t have a detection pen, the bills could have been identified because they all had the same serial number and were printed with the words “prop copy” on the back.
