A member of the Youngstown City Council is asking fellow members to approve spending $100,000 in American Rescue funds to help a local church complete a project converting a former sanctuary into a multi-purpose community center.

First Ward Councilman Julius Oliver will present legislation at Wednesday’s regular council meeting that would grant the funding to phase two of the expansion and renovation at New Bethel Baptist Church on Hillman Street.

The center will provide space to conduct youth programs and meet the family, social, and educational needs of the community, including meetings and banquets.

Mahoning County granted $100,000 in funding for the project earlier this summer.
