The government funding package passed by the U.S. Senate on Wednesday includes $9.3 million for projects in the Mahoning Valley, according to a media release from Senator Sherrod Brown's Office.

Canfield Township was awarded $263,000 for the Canfield Township Public Work Garage Expansion Project, which will add a 54-foot by 40-foot addition to the Public Works Department building to allow storage of all the township's large equipment in one location.

The Western Reserve Port Authority will also receive $6,160,000 for the Youngstown Warren Regional Primary Runway Project, which will provide resurfacing and other improvements for the area. The Youngstown Air Reserve Station will also receive $2,500,000 to build a base fire station at the air reserve.

The Ohio Department of Education will also receive $400,000 for the Youngstown East Side Connector Study, a detailed multi-modal transportation infrastructure to link Youngstown's East side to regional nodes of economic activity.

The Federal Railroad Administration will receive a $32 million increase for their safety and operations budget to help address rail safety deficiencies identified following the Norfolk Southern derailment in East Palestine. Following the hazardous train derailment in East Palestine, Brown has fought to make the community whole, hold Norfolk Southern accountable, and make sure a derailment like this doesn't happen again.

"This is a bipartisan success for Ohio that builds on our work to create jobs and invest in workers and their families and will deliver on crucial community projects spearheaded by Ohioans around the state. We are making critical investments that our state needs - including in Ohio's military facilities, and supporting Ohio veterans and farmers," said Senator Sherrod Brown.

The legislation, which passed the Senate with bipartisan support in a vote of 82-15, includes the first three appropriations bills to pass out of either chamber with bipartisan support this year.

Congress faces a November 17th deadline to agree on legislation that would avert a government shutdown.
