A Girard man convicted of raping a minor had his appeal denied.

Shane Newton was convicted for two counts of gross sexual imposition and one count of rape.

Newton was secretly indicted by the Trumbull County Grand Jury for raping a 9-year-old girl in Warren.

He was sentenced to a minimum of 25 years to life in prison.

In his appeal, Newton raised two assignments of error, according to court records. This includes that the trial court deprived Newton of the right to a fair trial when Judge Andrew D. Logan denied a request for a transcript of the victim's grand jury testimony.

Newton also argued that his right to effective assistance of counsel was violated when his lawyer failed to renew the request for the grand jury transcript.

The appellate judges ruled these assignments of error had no merit.

Newtown will continue to serve out his sentence at the Belmont Correctional Institution, his first parole eligibility in 2047.
