The Red Cross has been called to help a family after a house fire in Greenville Thursday afternoon.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. at a home in the 100 block of S Mercer Street.

Officials on scene told 21 News a fire started on the first floor of a two-story apartment building.

Two people were inside the home at the time and a worker was on the second floor.

Once the people inside saw smoke, they got out of the building.

There's no word yet on the cause of the fire but appears to be accidental.

Officials say a few animals died in the fire.
