POLICE: Suspected shooter in Boardman standoff tells officers shooting was accidental

BOARDMAN, Ohio - A person was injured in a shooting at a Boardman home Thursday evening.
Boardman Police Chief Todd Werth told 21 News that a person was shot in the leg at a home on the 4500 Block of Grover Drive around 8:30 p.m. Chief Werth says the victim is alive and at the hospital.
According to a police report, Boardman police responded to the scene shortly before 9:30 Thursday night for a woman who was allegedly shot in the leg and hip by her husband followed by a second gunshot.
Boardman police arrested a man identified as Jeffery Gilger Sr., who they believe was the shooter and his son Jeffery Gilger Jr. was arrested for obstruction.
Police say Gilger Jr. was initially not compliant with police's orders, but eventually approached officers. However, police say he still resisted arrest and continued approaching the victim despite orders to stop.
Eventually, police were able to subdue Gilger Jr., who allegedly told police that he had taken a shotgun from his father and destroyed it to prevent him from harming himself or others.
Soon after this, Gilger Sr. surrendered himself to police without incident. Police say Gilger Sr. made several comments to police such as "I just lost it" further telling police he caught the victim cheating on him.
When police asked why he shot her, Gilger Sr. allegedly told officers it was an accident saying "I didn't mean to shoot her. [I] fell into that pickup truck with my bad leg and the gun went off."
Police further allege Gilger Sr. told them he didn't think the gun worked and that he "really messed things up now." When asked about the second shot, Gilger Sr. allegedly told officers this too was an accident.
Meanwhile a witness told police when Gilger Jr. saw the initial argument going on, he tried to intervene telling his father to put the gun down just before the first shot was fired.
Once the two suspects were placed in custody, police searched the home and found the buttstock of a shotgun in a bathtub and additional pieces of the shotgun in the laundry room, as well as ammunition with at least one shell appearing to have been spent.
Police also found a hole in the ceiling of the basement stairwell that appeared to have been caused by a shotgun blast.
