POLAND TWP., Ohio - What was supposed to be a simple culvert replacement project is causing quite a bit of issues for truck drivers heading through Poland.

Construction began Monday, April 1 on a portion of Rt. 224, just east of Clingan Rd.

"Local traffic has been limited," said Poland Twp. Police Chief Greg Wilson. "We've been able to get the word out and residents have responded well. They're staying away from the area."

Law enforcement was expecting the area to lead to traffic for larger trucks. Crews had to stop about 60 to 70 trucks on Monday morning.

While detours are posted, weight restrictions on detoured roads are causing quite a hassle for large trucks.

Police Chief Greg Wilson said the main issue seems to be from traffic coming from Pennsylvania since these drivers aren't aware of the closure. Wilson told 21 News they're working to get some more signage, to alert them of what's happening, much sooner in their drive.

"The problems that we're getting is with the commercial trucks," said Chief Wilson. "We knew this was going to happen but we're working closely with ODOT on additional signage and move around the signs. It seems like traffic from the east coming into Ohio from Pennsylvania is where the majority of our problems are."

Chief Wilson also says anybody who needs to travel this way should keep tabs on social media and of course, through 21 News.

The road construction should last for approximately 2 weeks.
