Cleanup still ongoing for asphalt spill near Meander Reservoir in Austintown

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Nearly one month after an asphalt spill in Austintown near the Meander Reservoir, crews with the Ohio EPA are still at the scene cleaning up.
The spill happened Wednesday, July 3 after a tanker truck carrying 6,600 gallons of asphalt ran into an abandoned vehicle and went over a guardrail and down an embankment.
According to the Ohio EPA, cleanup at the site is expected to be completed by the end of next week. The EPA tells us the cleanup time has taken longer than normal due to the amount spilled in the reservoir and the area being difficult to access.
Both the EPA and the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District told 21 News no spilled materials are causing problems to the water quality or nearby environment and the drinking water in the area is safe.
In the meantime, the EPA's Office of Emergency Response is working with the EPA's wetlands program and an environmental consultant hired to evaluate the are and determine if any long-term restoration is needed.
