Youngstown student finds box of candy, suspected drugs in playground

YOUNGSTOWN - When the principal of a school on Youngstown’s Southside went to check out a student’s report that a box of candy was in the playground, she found a lot more than just candy.
The principal of South Side Academy called the police Wednesday afternoon after the student led her to a fishing tackle box in the playground at Oak Hill and Kenmore Avenues.
The box did contain several bags of assorted candy. However, there were also 90 capsules and 28 pills of various sizes, shapes, and colors.
The box was covered with a back t-shirt with the phrase “Senior Thug” printed on the back. A homemade crack pipe was also nearby.
The principal removed the box and turned it over to police investigators who took it and the crack pipe as evidence.
South Side Academy is a tuition-free charter school for students in grades K-8.
