The Ohio State Highway Patrol is looking into a crash in Bazetta Township that killed 1 person and seriously injured another early Sunday.

OSP's Warren Post states that round 1:30 a.m., 35-year-old Britni Ulam of Niles and 31-year-old Frank Walter from Cortland were traveling north on Route 46 in Bazetta Township. Their 2006 Nissan XSterra went off the right side of the road, hit a culvert, overturned and went back onto the road, then went down an embankment. Both Ulam and Walter -- who were not wearing seat belts -- were thrown from the vehicle.

Another crash happened when a 2014 Nissan Altima traveling southbound on that same stretch of Route 46 struck Frank Walter. The driver of that car was not injured, but Walter was declared dead at the scene. Ulam sustained serious injuries and was taken tot he hospital by Bazetta Township EMS.

OSP believes that alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the initial crash, but the incident is still under investigation.

The Bazetta Township Police Department, Bazetta Township Fire Department, Cortland Police Department and Cortland Fire Department helped in responding to the crash.
