Youngstown officials reaffirm park safety, advance tree removals and new developments
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown is moving forward with several major park improvement projects, focusing on safety, cleanup efforts, and public space development. At the latest Parks Committee meeting, officials outlined plans to enhance city parks, including reassuring the public about security efforts, removing trees at the B & O Station, and creating a new park on Market Street.
One of the key discussions centered on park safety. Officials emphasized that while patrols have been in place, they are reinforcing efforts to ensure officers actively walk through parks instead of relying solely on vehicle patrols. This approach, they say, has already helped staff identify and address unauthorized activity inside park facilities.
In addition to safety efforts, the ongoing tree removals at the B & O Station were another major focus. City leaders explained that this cleanup effort is part of a broader plan to improve access to the nearby river walk. The removals, funded through the American Rescue Plan (ARP), are necessary to clear space for future development and beautification of the area.
The meeting also highlighted the upcoming park project on Market Street, which is also being funded through ARP dollars. Officials say this will be a vibrant community space for residents.
“This will bring a labyrinth, walking trails, and a pavilion to the Uptown area, creating a transformational space,” said Chuck Shasho, Deputy Director of Public Works.
City leaders will continue monitoring these projects in upcoming meetings to ensure they meet the needs of the community.
