Heavy rain brings flooding and blocked roads in the Valley

MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio -

Heavy rain early Thursday forced a temporary closing of busy Interstate-80 and caused flooding in other areas.

The problem on I-80 was in the eastbound lanes at Salt Springs Road.

During a heavy downpour, rising water forced the Ohio Department of Transportation to close the eastbound lane around 7:00 a.m. The cause turned out to be a clogged drainage culvert.

"It was blocked by everything from roadside litter like bottles and fast food bags, to trash and construction debris," said ODOT District 4 spokesman, Brent Kovacs.

Once crews cleared the blocked drain the water dissipated and the road was reopened to traffic.

High water also caused problems in Brookfield. A culvert that runs under old Route 82 couldn't handle the heavy rain and it flooded Brookfield Square and the parking lot of Mr. D's supermarket.

"The culvert had overflowed like it has in the past. It caused a few problems, customers had trouble getting their cars parked and employees had to park in different spots," according to Mr. D's manager Ed D'nofrio.

No water got inside the store.

Just across the street a trailer home was completely surrounded by high water. The owner is Roger Galford.  "It was up to the bottom of the trailer there, three feet maybe, up to my knees," Galford said.

The garage was flooded but the trailer was elevated and the water stopped short of getting inside the home.

Scattered power outages also were reported due to downed power lines.
