1 dog dead, dozens of cats in severe condition after removal from south side home

57 cats and one dog were removed from a home on the 400 block of Breaden St. on Youngstown's south side Wednesday afternoon.
One dog, removed in critical condition, was taken to Animal Charity Humane Society's emergency clinic where it passed away, according to Jane MacMurchy of Animal Charity.
Animal Charity Humane Society arrived at the home 12:30 Wednesday morning in response to an anonymous voicemail that had been left the previous night.
Upon arriving to the home, MacMurchy tells 21 News that the smell of cat urine was evident as far out as the street.
The home was occupied by 4 adult residents, who told Animal Charity that they owned about 15 cats. But upon entering the property, MacMurchy identified what she called a "severe cat hoarding" incident, and with the help of Youngstown Community Police, removed the four adults from the home.
About two and a half hours later, rescue efforts began for the animals in the home, who were lured out with food. According to MacMurchy, all the animals in the home were in "severe shape."
In the following hours, more than 60 cats were identified in the home, though MacMurchy says there are holes in the walls and furniture where more may be hiding.
According to MacMurchy, rescue efforts will continue well into the night Wednesday, and may last several days as Animal Charity works to locate any animals inside.
According to Animal Charity, 57 cats were removed today, and traps set to hopefully retrieve more overnight.
The four adults, according to MacMurchy, will face "a significant amount of animal cruelty charges," though none have yet been filed.
MacMurchy said she expects that as much as $25,000 may be needed to give all the rescued animals proper care, and asks the community for any donations that they can provide, including cat food and clumping cat litter.
