AKRON, Ohio- Valley businessman John J. Cafaro pleaded guilty to a charge of making false statements to the government Wednesday morning.

Cafaro was ordered to be held in jail in Summit county at least until his detention hearing on Monday, March 22, after he refused, on the advice of counsel, to disclose his financial information.

The judge advised him that financial information is required for purposes of setting bond, regardless of stature.

Cafaro appeared surprised when was ordered to remove his belt and tie and was remanded into custody.

Cafaro was accused of failing to report a  loan to the 2004 congressional campaign of his daughter, Capri.

A campaign report disclosed a $2,000 donation, but not an additional $10,000 given through an unnamed staffer.

The Justice Department is recommending a sentence of probation to six months in jail under the plea agreement, but the judge could sentence him to up to five years.

The government also agrees not to pursue any additional charges against Cafaro or his daughte, Capri, under the terms of the plea deal.
