Layoffs take effect for Mahoning county engineers

MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio- Layoffs will officially take effect Friday for 11 employees from the Mahoning County Engineer's office.
Members of Teamsters Local 377 opted not to vote on a concessions package Thursday that may have avoided two of the layoffs, instead deciding to wait until the results of a performance evaluation of the department that is due in June.
Sam Prosser, president of the union, said they want to know where all of the money in the department is going before agreeing to anything.
"I have a stack of papers here with raises from 2005 for two, three, five dollars an hour for the office personnel and supervisors. This is where a lot of money is going that the public needs to know about," Prosser said.
Brian Brajer, a truck driver for the county, said the layoffs have not been fair.
"We are going to have 18 guys out of work. They have two laid off. I mean, how many supervisors do we need? We have supervisors watching one guy, basically," Brajer said.
The union is appealling the layoffs to the state personnel board.
Engineers must demonstrate why the layoffs are necessary by April 8.
