YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Federal and local agents file a 101-count indictment against 28 people in a massive, inter-state, organized drug ring.

The 28 mug shots read like a family tree for the inter-state organized drug ring stretching from California to New York and Youngstown. Most of those charged in the ring are from the Mahoning Valley. The indictment alleges that the drug ring operated from 2006 to 2010.

Twenty-two of the 28 charged are in police custody in a crackdown that spread across the country and locally included former Youngstown firefighter Andre Johnson, who was fired following drug charges four years ago, and former Youngstown State football player Shawntell Patton.

At a press conference in Youngstown, federal officials said the operation moved very large amounts of drugs including wholesale, bulk and retail amounts of heroin, cocaine, crack, marijuana and meth.

At one point, police intercepted 13 pounds of meth coming into the Valley. "This is one of the largest methamphetamine seizures in the history of the state of Ohio," said Pete Bickmore, FBI Assistant Special Agent.

Those indicted in the ring will face federal drug charges. "By indicting them on federal charges, we up the ante in terms of the time. We up the ante in terms of lessening the possibility of these individuals being able to plea bargain their way to lesser charges," said Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams.

Though the bust doesn't clear out all the drugs in the Valley, police believe it's a serious dent in local suppliers.
