UPDATED: Former Trumbull County engineer pleads guilty
WARREN, Ohio - Trumbull County's former engineer agrees to a plea deal.
David DeChristofaro plead guilty to theft a feloney and conflict of interest a misdemeanor.
DeChristofaro says he made a mistake and although he wasn't trying to benefit from his office, he says he's taking responsibility. Part of that responsiblity is agreeing to the plea deal.
DeChristofaro's attorney, Mike Bowler, says, "He's extremely happy that it's over. It's been a huge amount of pressure and stress, especially on his family. And part of the reason we're here is to get on with is life."
The plea deal is a result of a joint investigation between the Ohio Attorney General's office and the Ohio Ethics Committee. Special Prosecutor Paul Scarsell says, "During the course of that investigation it was revealed that Mr. DeChristofaro was using his office for numerous political and personal reasons. As an elected official, the public money and the public labor that is employed as part of that engineers office is suppose to be used for county work only."
DeChristofaro used his staff and office equipment for the planning of numerous political fundraisers and for mailings to precinct committee members, Christmas cards, and even thank you cards for his daughters wedding.
He resigned from his position earlier this month. Now he's been sentenced to two years probation. He'll also have to pay $5,000.00 in restitution to the county and another $7,400.00 to cover the cost of the investigation into his wrong doings.
And his troubles aren't over yet. It's possible his engineering license could be revoked. Although he's hopeful it won't be. And he's still involved in a civil suit against him for wrongful termination.
