Youngstown man sentenced in killing of his girlfriend, injuring friend

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A Youngstown man is sentenced to 62 years to life in prison for shooting and killing his girlfriend and seriously injuring her friend.
Twenty-year-old Melvin Shaw showed no emotion as the sentence was handed down by Judge James Evans.
A jury found Shaw guilty of killing his 17-year-old girlfriend Tracee Banks in June of 2010.
He was also convicted of attempted murder for shooting Jamel Turner.
Banks' mother cried as she urged the judge to sentence Shaw to life with no chance for parole.
"She loved her family and her friends, and she loved him and he murdered her," Banks' mother said. "He took the best part of me and shot her down. She didn't stand a chance once he shot her. The coroner said a couple of minutes. That's all she lived for."
Shaw's attorney says they will appeal.
