SEBRING, Ohio - The Copeland Oaks Retirement Community in Sebring is celebrating its golden anniversary this year and residents and employees have found 50 ways to commemorate the occasion.

"We have people who are walking with walkers, people walking with canes. We have a couple gentlemen in their 90s that are walking. We even have a gentleman who is in his 80s; he does his mile on a unicycle," said Copeland Oaks Wellness Director Suzi Bleggi.

As a way to celebrate the retirement community's golden anniversary, employees and residents are logging 50 miles through its Golden Stride for Wellness Program which launched in early April.

"It's a good thing for conditioning, especially at our age. You can't beat walking," said Copeland Oaks resident Rick Sampson.

The group is already about third of the way through their celebration. Twice a week, for 25 weeks, residents and employees are encouraged to either walk alone or with the group. They'll walk their final mile in October, the same month the retirement community will honor its founders.

"It has been fun. I've met different people that I didn't know before and I've really enjoyed it," said Copeland Oaks resident Pat Pumphry.

Bleggi, who came up with the idea, says she felt it was a fitting way to celebrate the milestone because Copeland Oaks focuses heavily on its residents well being.
