McDonald's Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Thursday, Sept. 26, 9 to 11 a.m. ECHHO College Fair at OCCHA, 3660 Shirley Road, Youngstown. The 2013 Annual Educators and Community Helping Hispanics Onward Inc. College Fair is geared toward Hispanic/Latino high school students and their parents but open to others. Co-sponsored by YSU's Office of Admissions, OCCHA, and ECHHO. Saturday, Sept. 28, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Market Street at the Main Branch Public Library, 305 Wick Avenue, Youngstown. The Market Street Muppets, a non-profit, faith-based group of urban youth ages 12 to 18, perform at 11:30 a.m. The group promotes messages of nonviolence, faith and character building. Thursday, Oct. 3, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Families With Disabilities and Special Needs at OCCHA, 3660 Shirley Road, Youngstown. The event is designed to provide information and resources to families of children and adults with special needs and/or disabilities. Saturday, Oct. 5, noon to 3 p.m. Hispanic Heritage Celebration in Kilcawley Center, Chestnut Room, YSU. The main event of the celebration features animals from the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, musical entertainment, children's activities and student recognitions, as well as vendors, cultural displays, an informational fair and Hispanic foods for purchase. Thursday, Oct. 10, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar at OCCHA, 3660 Shirley Road, Youngstown. Dr. Zoraida Mendez, oncologist, and Dr. Consuelo Mendez, internal medicine, provide information on awareness and early detection. Dinner is included but pre-registration is required by calling 330-781-1808.
Friday, Oct. 11. International Coffee Hour 2 to 3:45 p.m., and "Journey of New Americans" at 4 p.m., at the YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Avenue, Youngstown. Mingle with YSU students and the community, and enjoy the delicacies of Latino desserts and coffee. Following the Coffee Hour, YSU Professor Rosemary D'Apolito discusses the Journey of New Americans, especially the changing patterns in the foreign-born population in the Mahoning Valley. On display will be photos of women who migrated to the Valley, who are part of the traveling exhibit "Women of the World: A Photographic Journey of New Americans in the Mahoning Valley." Friday, Nov. 1, 5:30 to 11 p.m. OCCHA's 41st Annual Gala at the Georgetown Banquet Hall, 5945 South Avenue, Boardman, Ohio. OCCHA, a social service agency serving the Hispanic and Multi-Cultural community, is celebrating 41 years of service with a fundraiser dinner at the Georgetown Banquet Center. Cocktail hour begins at 5:30 p.m., and dinner is at 6:30 p.m. Musical entertainment will be provided by Steve Frazzini and a Hispanic DJ. There will be an auction and a 50/50 raffle. Adults only.
