DETROIT, Mich. - Sales of the Chevrolet Cruze took a substantial dip last month.

According to figures released by General Motors on Tuesday, Chevy sold 12,730 models of the  small, Lordstown made car in September.  That's a nearly 51% percent drop in sales compared to the 25,787 models sold one year ago during the same period.

September, 2013 Cruze sales were also down 47% from August sales of 23,909 models.

Cruze sales numbers were behind those of the Chevy Malibu (14,487) and  Equinox S-U-V (15,443).

The latest figures come in the wake of a glowing report in July, when GM reported record sales for the Cruze.

Cruze sales for the year to date are 8.4% higher than the same period in 2012.

GM reports that overall vehicle deliveries declined eleven percent from a year ago in September.

In its news release, GM vice president Kurt McNeil is quoted as saying, "We expect a strong finish to the year and more growth in 2014 thanks to new products and a healthier economy."
