Sources: Former judge Mark Belinky to plead guilty
Sources close to the investigation tell 21 News that former Mahoning County Probate Court Judge Mark Belinky will enter a guilty plea in connection with charges filed in the wake of a state investigation.
21 News has learned that Belinky will appeal in Mahoning County Common Pleas court this afternoon before a visiting judge where he will plead guilty to a bill of information charging him with tampering with records in relation to his political campaign.
A bill of information is usually filed when a defendant agrees to forego the grand jury indictment process.
In February, agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and sheriff's deputies searched Belinky's courthouse office and his Boardman home.
According to a search warrant, investigators were looking for bank records, campaign finance reports, lists of donations and donors, ledgers, and any documentation, computers electronic storage devices, and electronic media.
Belinky has since resigned from the bench, and the Ohio Supreme Court has appointed an interim judge until Governor John Kasich can select someone to complete Belinky's unexpired term
Attorney Dan Kasaris was appointed as special assistant Mahoning County Prosecuting Attorney on February 6 to conduct the investigation into Belinky.
Kasaris is a former assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor, and is currently a Senior Assistant Ohio Attorney General.
