A second man has been convicted of less serious charges in connection with the robbery and killing of a Youngstown real estate agent four years ago.
As a result, Robert Brooks will not be sentenced to death, but still faces the possibility of life without parole.
As jury selection was beginning in Mahoning County Court on Friday, Brooks pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, kidnapping, and aggravated arson.
Authorities say Brooks and Grant Cooper lured Vivian Martin to an east side home in September of 2010, where they robbed and killed the 67-year-old woman. Investigators say the home was set on fire to conceal the crimes.
Cooper pleaded guilty earlier to charges of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated robbery, kidnapping and aggravated arson. He'll be sentenced next month.
Cooper also could have faced the death penalty if he had been found guilty of more serious charges.
In exchange for Cooper promising to testify in the Brooks trail, prosecutors agreed to recommend a sentence of 29 years when he is sentenced in October.
Brooks will be sentenced later.
