Woman to reclaim $5,500 mistakenly donated to Grove City thrift shop

GROVE CITY, Pa. - A woman will be reunited with thousands of dollars she mistakenly gave to a Grove City thrift store, thanks to a story seen on 21 News.
As we reported on Monday, Debbie Kochems said that a volunteer found $5,500 stashed in the toe of a shoe that had been donated to the All Good Things Thrift Shoppe, which Kochems operates.
Kochems said that the shoe was included in several bags of men's clothing that had been dropped off at the store by an elderly widow.
It was a more than generous donation that has the rightful owner of the cash just as surprised as the volunteer who found it.
"When you look, you can see just the edge of it. And, I reached in and pulled it out and was in shock," said Rev. Jerry MaHaffey.
Susan Armstrong's husband would often hide this stack of cash inside his suits, money she was to use for his funeral, if he passed away. But when she lost the love of her life in late August, the money was nowhere to be found, until this week.
All Good Things thrift shoppe in Grove City said they receive all kinds of donations, random bags, filled with a penny, maybe a random dollar, but never that much money.
"From the minute we found the money, we started to try and identify who the lady was and we were able to piece together a composite. And from the moment, we knew that we could, we figured we could find her with the help of publicity, like your news station, we just wanted to do the right thing," said Kochems.
Armstrong was able to identify items she dropped off to verify the money was hers. She believes her husband moved the stash of cash, after he discovered she knew where he was hiding it.
All Good Things Thrift shoppe is in the business of giving second-hand items a second chance and the volunteers hope having the money back in her pocket will help Susan find peace.
