Woman charged for crash with Youngstown police cruiser

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - An Akron woman faces charges after she allegedly tried to flee the scene of an accident involving a Youngstown police officer.
Police say that 22-year-old Jacqueline Nelson was driving on Market Street Wednesday afternoon when she ran a red light at Midlothian Boulevard.
According to the police report, Nelson's Ford Focus ran into a Youngstown police cruiser that was traveling on Midlothian, on the way to answer a call.
Police say that after her car spun around, Nelson attempted to flee south on Handel Court. She stopped her car when another police officer sounded the cruiser's siren.
Nelson told investigators that her brakes had failed at the intersection. However, the police report notes that the brakes worked when she stopped her car after the crash.
Neither Nelson, nor officer Patrick Mulligan were seriously injured, but they were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Nelson is charged with disobeying a traffic signal, failing to stop after an accident and driving a vehicle under suspension.
