Ohio drivers can show insurance I.D. on smart phone

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - No one wants to be pulled over by police but if you are, do you have up-to-date proof of insurance with you?
A new law that takes effect Monday could make looking for that proof a lot easier.
Ohio drivers can now show proof of insurance to police, courts or to the BMV with a smartphone or other electronic device.
You would have to go through your insurance company's website or app to show your official I.D. card online.
It's just a matter of logging in the app or website and typing in a password.
Ray Fallen, of State Farm Insurance, says, "It is a legal I.D. card. It's everything they need to see, no more no less. It's your name, your policy number, the car, the VIN number, who the agent is and what the coverages are so you can demonstrate to the police or the courts that you are in compliance with the state financial responsibilities statutes."
So what's the reason for the new law? People can be very forgetful. They forget to put the proof of insurance in their car when it comes up for renewal every six months. So when they get pulled over and they open up this glove box, most of the time they find the paper in there has already expired.
Some people say the new law is a good idea.
Shane Grate of Hanoverton says, "I have my phone always on me and sometimes I forget to print out my insurance card. So I'd have that more readily accessible."
Others say they'll stick to the old fashioned way.
Patricia Goldberg of Howland says, "I would think having it right there being able to get it right away, not having to worry about finding your phone or finding the application I think personally that would be easier for me."
