YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - People making purchases in Mahoning County have only until Wednesday until a sales tax increase approved by voters kicks in.

On April 1, Mahoning County will join 49 other counties in Ohio having a sales tax rate of 7.25 percent.

In November voters approved a half percent renewal and quarter percent sales tax increase to fund the sheriff's department, the prosecutor's office, the coroner and the 9-1-1 system.

Under the new rate, the sales tax on the purchase of a $16,170 Chevy Cruze will increase by $40.

Columbiana County also collects a 7.25 percent sales tax.

The sales tax rate in Trumbull County is 6.75 percent, however commissioners have scheduled hearings on April 15 and April 20 to discuss raising the tax to 7 percent

Four counties have the lowest sales tax rates in Ohio. Stark, Wayne, Lorain and Butler Counties levy a tax of 6.5 percent.

With a sales tax of 8 percent, Cuyahoga County has the highest rate in Ohio.
