COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State Senator Shannon Jones introduced legislation that will require children under 16-years-old to wear a helmet while riding a bike.

The intention of the bill is to save lives and prevent injuries from riding a bike without a helmet.

Jones said,"Bike helmets are the single most effective way to reduce head injuries and fatalities resulting from bike crashes."

According to the legislation, those who fail to use a helmet would face a $25 fine on the first offense. Repeat violators would experience a $100 fine.

Once violators are fined, their parents or guardians would be responsible for the payment. However, fines can be waived if violators obtain and vow to use “approved” helmets.

An "approved” helmet means a helmet that meets or exceeds the standards for protective bicycle helmets established by the the United States consumer product safety commission, the American society for testing and materials, the Snell memorial foundation, or a safety standard established under federal law or a law of this state.

The legislation will be referred to a committee for further consideration.
