Youngstown firefighters rescue man from water in Mill Creek Park
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Mill Creek MetroParks Police are investigating after a 19-year-old man fell into the water between the Newport Dam and Lanterman's Falls Thursday night.
An 18-year-old woman told MetroParks Police that she was unable to locate two men she had been walking with on the trails.
When officers found one of the men on a trail, he told them that his friend had fallen off the side of the trail into the creek and was unable to climb out of the water.
The officer located the subject in the water, but was unable to rescue him. Police called in the Youngtown Fire Department and Rural Metro Ambulance for assistance.
Firefighters were able to rescue the teen and he was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Care Center in Youngstown.
Youngstown Fire Battalion Chief Ron Russo says his men used their training and did a good job.
"There's no footing. Everything you do, you do on ropes. These guys have experience. They have the training to do it. They did a fine job. He's out. He's banged up a little bit. He's on his way to the hospital, but he's alive," said Russo
Chief Russo says that if crews hadn't responded in time, the victim may have passed out from shock.
The injuries involved are described as non-life threatening.
Park officials point out that the park closes at dark and it is against regulations to be on park property one half hour after sunset.
