HERMITAGE, Pa. - This year marks the 100th anniversary of Buhl Farm Park and the Buhl Day community celebration.

Since 1915, generations of families have taken a day off and enjoyed all that Buhl Farm Park has to offer, and it's all thanks to the generosity of industrialist Frank Buhl and his wife Julia.

To mark the anniversary a special historical display is being presented on the second floor of the parks casino building.

Frank Buhl donated the more than 300 acres of land to the community in November of 1915. His wish was for the property to be a place the community could enjoy.

"In this exhibit there are several quotes by Mr. Buhl, he wanted this to be a place of recreation for residents of the valley and the surrounding areas," said Tom Kuster, a Buhl Day volunteer guide.

The exhibit includes many vintage photographs and mementos from past Buhl Day celebrations.

"Everything that you see today was basically laid out in 1915, there were picnic groves, the roadways, there were the flowers," Kuster added.

Buhl wanted the park to be free to the public, Even today the Buhl golf course is the only free golf course in the country. Another gift by Mr. Buhl has made the park easier to maintain.

"Along with the gift of the deed that he gave us the land, he also gave an endowment of around $690-thousand," said Kuster.

And that endowment has grown over the years. The people of Sharon appreciate the generosity and vision and Mr. Buhl.

"We're very fortunate to have this, I think it's great all year around'," Debbie Long of Sharon said.

Around 30,000 people attend Buhl Day annually.
