Giant Eagle offers free antibiotics

PITTSBURGH - Giant Eagle has announced that it is offering select generic oral antibiotics free of charge at all of its pharmacies through February 28, 2016.
Beginning Thursday, November 12, 2015, Giant Eagle Advantage Card customers can receive their generic oral antibiotics free with a qualifying physician’s prescription.
There are no limits on the number of prescriptions that can be filled, and it includes both new prescriptions and refills. Giant Eagle will provide up to a 14-day supply of the following generic oral antibiotics free of charge:
- Amoxicillin
- Ampicillin
- Cephalexin
- Ciprofloxacin
- Penicillin VK
- SMZ/TMP
- SMZ/TMP OS
Common infections that these free antibiotics treat range from strep throat, ear infections and conjunctivitis to bladder infections, pneumonia, acne, urinary tract and skin infections. Some of the antibiotics are also used as a means to prevent infections caused by certain dental procedures.
According to a January 2015 data brief published by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, nearly one in 10 American adults does not take their medications as prescribed because they cannot afford to. Using data from the 2013 National Health Interview for the report, the researchers found that, overall, approximately eight percent of adults admitted not taking medication as recommended due to high costs.
