NORTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio - In Trumbull county the first piece of DNA evidence has come back in last year's disappearance of Rainn Peterson.
Rainn was found in a field last October after going missing for more than two days.
Sheriff Tom Altiere says a cigarette and an partially eaten apple was found near the toddler where she was discovered alive.
He says DNA was found on the cigarette, but nothing on the apple. It's too early to know if the cigarette DNA could play a role in the overall investigation. Altiere says still has the same person of interest in mind as he did back in December, when 21 News first reported he had strong suspicions about her disappearance.
The wait on processing additional evidence continues as the department can only send one item at a time to be tested by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
One of the next items to be sent will include the clothing Peterson was wearing when she disappeared. Relatives told 21 News that the outfit Peterson was wearing the day she went missing was brand new and that she only came into contact with a select group of individuals that day.
Peterson remains in the care of her great-grandparents who are now trying to help the the 2-year-old to carry on a normal life.
