YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Mahoning County Coroner's office says a hammer may have been used in the fatal beating of an 87-year-old Youngstown man.

According to Medical Examiner Dr. Joseph Ohr, head and chest injuries found on the body of William Cox Jr., are consistent with those inflicted by a household hammer.

It was around 11:30 Monday night when Youngstown Police and the crime lab were called to a home in the 300 block of Harvard Street on the city's north side.

That's where they found Navy veteran William Cox, Junior with multiple injuries to his head and chest.

Roy Surles is a neighbor and friend who lives across the street, "I was devastated. Because in this neighborhood this don't go on over here. And to just hear that an 87-year-old man got killed, you know that was really devastating to me and my wife."

Surles has been friends with the victim for about 36 years and was shocked to learn that the person suspected of killing Cox was the victim's 28-year-old great grandson Julius Williams, Junior. However, he did express concern that the victim's great grandson suffered from some mental illness.

"He really loved that kid, and he would do anything for him. When he came to stay with him he took him in because he didn't have nowhere to go -- so he just moved in with him," Surles said.

It's believed that it was the suspect, Williams, who called 911 for help, but with little emotion.

"I need an ambulance and a police cruiser because there's a dead body down here that you need to get up," the 911 caller who identied himself as Williams said.

Williams is in the Mahoning County Jail charged with Aggravated Murder.  He is expected to make his initial appearance in court on Wednesday.
