YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown's only public swimming pool is scheduled to open for the season on Wednesday.

North Side Pool on Belmont Avenue opens at 1:00 p.m., but the pool will not be open every day of the week.

The pool will be closed Sundays due to a lifeguard shortage.

Youngstown Parks and Recreation Director Bob Burke says the pool will be open six days a week because he needs to give the lifeguards a day off.

Burke says ways to become a lifeguard include taking classes through the Jewish Community Center, the YMCA, and Youngstown State University.

Applications for those who already have their license are available in the park office.

North Side Pool is open Monday through Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Admission is one dollar for kids and two dollars for adults.

Employees will also be taking measures to promote child water safety this summer.

The pool will have a special event Friday, June 17 from 9:00 a.m. to noon with the YMCA.

The event, titled "Splash Into Summer", is a water safety program that will help kids ages six to twelve learn survival skills in the water and how to assist other swimmers in distress.
